There is never a day when there is a story of some kind of addiction. While certain addictions are more serious than others. What exactly is an addiction? Addiction is a compulsive habit that a person doesn't wish to engage in but can't stop due to feelings of stress and anxiety.

Sometimes, the line between habit and compulsion can be fuzzy and it's difficult to differentiate between the two types of behavior. Use these questions to determine if the behavior is addictive or habitual:

  1. Are there ways to stay away from the behavior? If yes, how for how long?

  2. What happens emotionally, physically, and mentally if the behavior ceases?

  3. How often does this behavior occur?

  4. Does the act have a personal or a social significance?

If you answer these questions honestly you can determine the difference between compulsion and habit. Once the distinction is made, steps must be taken to end the habit or seek help to manage and stop the habit.

There are many types of counseling that are successful in the treatment of addictions. Individual therapy is a great way to aid in keeping the addiction(s) secret and tackle them on a personal level.
